Am I the only one who burns rice and saves it by throwing a slice of bread on top?
I scorched a whole pot of jasmine rice last Tuesday while I was watching the Rangers game, and my roommate told me to drop a piece of white bread on top and cover it for 10 minutes. The bread soaked up that burnt smell and the rice tasted fine, no scraping needed. Does this actually work with other grains or am I just getting lucky?
Wait, did the bread actually pull the burnt taste out of the rice itself or did it just kill the smell so you could eat around the scorched layer at the bottom? Because those are two very different things and I want to know which one is happening here. If it is just covering up the smell, then you are still eating smoky rice and the bread is basically a lie you tell your nose. Also did you leave the pot on the burner when you did this or did you move it off the heat first? That part matters a ton because residual heat keeps cooking the bottom layer into a black brick no matter what you put on top. And what about the texture of the bread after ten minutes, was it soggy and gross or did it stay together enough to just toss it? My gut says this only works on white rice in a pot with a decent lid, but I would love to be wrong since I scorch stuff constantly.
