Let the smoke detector be your timer trick backfired on me

Saw a tip online saying to just let the smoke detector go off as a reminder to check your food. Tried it last night with some chicken thighs. Detector went off after 10 minutes, I checked, they looked fine. Put them back in. Detector went off again 5 minutes later. At that point the chicken was black on top and raw in the middle. Found that "tip" on a food blog from 2019. Has anyone else tried timing things by smell alone and ended up with a smoky kitchen?

Read that same tip on some random cooking forum years ago and it failed me too lmao. The smoke detector doesn't know the difference between searing and burning so you just end up with a panicked kitchen. I started using my phone timer instead and never looked back, way less stressful honestly.

Phone timer is the real move for sure. I actually went and bought one of those cheap digital timers with the magnet back and stuck it right on the hood of my stove. Costs like 5 bucks at the grocery store and now I just set it every time I put a pan on heat. No more panic waving a towel at the smoke detector while my steak burns.
