My 12th burnt dinner in a row finally made me buy a smoke detector for the kitchen

So I'm not a great cook, but I was on a streak of 12 straight dinners that ended up with something burnt. Last Tuesday I tried to make a simple pasta with garlic bread and the bread turned into charcoal in like 3 minutes. I was so frustrated I just sat there staring at the smoke pouring out of the toaster oven. My roommate came home and asked if I was trying to signal planes. That's when I realized I didn't even own a smoke detector for the kitchen area. I always thought they were overkill for a tiny apartment but after that 12th fail I ordered one off Amazon. It arrived yesterday and I used it for the first time on some chicken thighs. They came out slightly overdone but not burnt and the detector never went off. Do you guys think a smoke detector actually helps you learn or does it just make you more anxious about overcooking stuff?

That 12th burnt dinner sounds rough but honestly a smoke detector is one of those things you kinda gotta have just for safety, not cooking tips. I had a similar situation where I forgot a frozen pizza in the oven and the smoke detector saved my whole apartment building from possibly going up. It won't teach you to not burn stuff but it'll yell at you before the fire gets serious, so you catch it earlier and learn from the mistake. Just don't rely on it to fix your timing, that's all practice and maybe a timer on your phone.

Wait are you really acting like you needed a smoke detector to save your whole building from a frozen pizza? I've definitely blackened plenty of frozen pizzas and the smoke was annoying but never came close to an actual fire. Unless you left it in there for like 3 hours it's just gonna smoke up the place not start a full blaze. Most smoke detectors are way too sensitive anyway they go off if you look at the toaster wrong. The real move is just open a window and wave a towel around that handles 90% of smoke situations.
