My cast iron skillet finally bit the dust after 10 years
I was searing a steak two nights ago and heard this loud crack. Looked down and my trusty old Lodge skillet had a hairline fracture right through the middle. I tried to finish the steak anyway but the oil just leaked through onto the burner. Now I gotta figure out if I should buy another cast iron or try one of those carbon steel pans I keep hearing about. Anyone else had a skillet just give up on them out of nowhere?

Bit the dust" feels a little dramatic for a 10 year old pan.

Wait, hold on - TEN years for a nonstick pan? That's practically unheard of in my kitchen experience. I've had good pans start peeling and chipping well before that five year mark. Honestly, your pan deserves a little drama if it managed to hang on that long without turning into a flaking mess.

Ten years is a long time for a nonstick pan though, they usually start flaking way before that. Sounds like it earned a proper funeral, honestly. I'd say "bit the dust" is fitting for any kitchen gear that survives a decade of pancakes and scrambled eggs.
