That $50 cast iron skillet my wife wanted... now it's a rust bucket

I spent $50 on a Lodge cast iron skillet thinking I'd be all fancy making cornbread. Left it in the sink overnight after some baked beans and now it looks like something from a shipwreck. Anyone got tips for rescuing rusted cast iron without spending more money?

Oh wow, that's a tough lesson to learn the hard way... did you at least try to scrub it with steel wool and some dish soap before it got this bad, or did you just toss it in the sink and forget about it? Because if the rust is just surface deep, you might still be able to save it with some elbow grease and a quick re-season in the oven... didn't the beans leave that acidic film that basically ate through the seasoning while it sat there?

Overnight soak did that? What exactly did you do to it after the beans - scrub it, dry it, or just walk away? Because baked beans are super acidic so that rust started forming the second the sauce hit the iron.

Saw someone strip their seasoning by not rinsing the beans first.
