The night I tried to impress my in-laws with a $40 ribeye

Last Tuesday I bought a beautiful 16-ounce ribeye from the butcher on Main Street, $40 I'll never see again. Searched it hard on the cast iron, got a perfect crust, then threw it in the oven at 450... for 22 minutes instead of 12. My father-in-law chewed through half of it before politely asking if I'd meant to cook it like a hockey puck. Has anyone else had a guest try to be nice about a ruined meal, or did they just laugh at you?

Bit into that steak and realized I could've resurfaced my driveway with the leftover material. Your father-in-law deserves a medal for choking down half of it mine would've asked if I was making charcoal for the grill next weekend. At least you gave him a good story to tell his buddies at the diner the next morning. Did you offer him a saw to finish cutting through that thing?

Oh man, I used to be one of those "rare or nothing" guys, you know? I genuinely thought anything past medium rare was a crime against cows. But after a few disasters exactly like this one, I've come around to the idea that there's a time and place for medium. Not well done, don't get me wrong, but that shoe leather phase between medium rare and hockey puck taught me that sometimes you just gotta meet people where they're at with the heat. Plus I'd rather eat a properly cooked medium steak than choke down something I have to saw through just to prove a point.
