The week I tried to save a burnt casserole with ketchup and made it worse
Last Monday I forgot a chicken casserole in the oven for 45 extra minutes and tried to mask the burnt taste with half a bottle of ketchup, and my family still asks me why the house smelled like a campfire for three days.

Man oh man, that ketchup trick is a trap I've fallen for myself. The sugar in ketchup just caramelizes and makes the burnt taste even more intense and smoky. You're basically turning a dry hockey puck into a sticky, charred hockey puck that nobody wants to touch.

Ketchup's not the real problem here. The issue is trying to salvage something that's been burnt to that point. Once a casserole looks like charcoal briquettes, no sauce is gonna fix it. Tossing half a bottle of ketchup on there just turned the burnt bits into a paste that spread the burnt flavor everywhere. Should have just scraped off the top layer and served the rest if it wasn't black all the way through. Way better to cut your losses than compound the mistake.
