Just realized I've been seasoning my cast iron wrong for like 2 years

I always put way too much oil on, so it got all sticky and gross. Then I saw a video where the guy wiped it off like he was trying to remove it, and that's the whole trick. Anybody else have that aha moment with something simple?

Two years is a solid stretch to be walking around with sticky pans. My kitchen towels basically became part of the seasoning at a certain point. That lightbulb moment where you realize less is more with cooking oil, it's a humbling one for sure. Turns out my cast iron skillet was basically a science project, not a cooking tool.

My buddy used bacon grease for months before realizing that was why his pan tasted like an ashtray.

Ditto, @felix_williams71. Learned that lesson the hard way too.
