Realized after 8 years of cooking that my smoke alarm is basically a dinner timer

Had to pull a half-charred lasagna out of the oven last Tuesday in Denver while using a wooden spoon to hold the smoke detector button down and it hit me that I've been relying on that loud beep to tell me when food is done instead of checking the clock like a normal person.

Wait, are you telling me that thing isn't supposed to go off every single time I cook? I swear my smoke alarm is more reliable than my oven timer at this point. I've got a whole system where I just wait for the first beep to know the cheese is bubbling, then I run over and fan the sensor with a dish towel. My neighbors probably think I'm running a fire drill every Tuesday night, but honestly, it's just the only way I remember to pull anything out before it turns into charcoal.

Wait, @mitchell.lee is that really your secret sauce, just waiting for the smoke alarm to be the sous chef? My timers just make me feel guilty while I scroll through my phone and let everything burn anyway. You've turned fire drills into a recipe, I guess that's one way to solve the problem.
