Serious question, is it better to scrap a burnt meal or try to salvage it?
Overheard my buddy arguing with his wife on the phone. He said scraping off the black bits is fine, she said just toss it. Totally depends on the food right? Like a burnt pizza crust you can cut off. But a burnt sauce? That smoky taste ruins everything. I tried saving a scorched pot of chili last month. Added extra broth and spices. Still tasted like a campfire. Wasted good beef and beans. Other side says you waste money throwing it out. Dinner time debate. What do you guys do when it's past the point of no return?

Wait, are you saying burnt chili is a lost cause forever? I gotta push back a little on that one. Scraping off the burnt bits isn't the same as trying to salvage a fully scorched sauce. The black layer on a pizza crust is carbon, that's fine to cut off. But once your chili has that deep smoky burn all the way through the liquid, you're not fixing that with broth. The char flavor takes over everything, and no amount of extra beans or tomato paste can drown it out. Best bet is to toss it before you waste more ingredients trying to save a lost cause.

Burnt chili is basically just a science experiment in how much liquid it takes to make charcoal edible. Toss it before your whole kitchen smells like regret for a week.
