That $27 garlic press fell apart during the 4th clove, should've just used a knife

I got this fancy stainless steel garlic press at a kitchen supply shop in Portland last Tuesday. Looked solid, had good reviews online. Went to press some garlic for pasta and on the 4th clove the hinge just snapped clean off. Little metal bits went everywhere, into the sauce too. Had to fish them out and start over. Anyone else had a kitchen tool fail right when you needed it most? What do you actually use for garlic now, flat side of a knife or something else?
