Hired a lawyer from a TV ad in Fresno or waited for legal aid, and I picked wrong
When my SSD hearing got scheduled, I had two choices: call the firm I kept seeing on TV in Fresno, or stay on the legal aid waitlist that was already 7 months long. I went with the TV lawyer because I panicked about the date, and he showed up to my hearing with my file still in the envelope. Now I am back at square one and wondering if anyone here has found a good disability lawyer in the Central Valley who actually reads the medical records first.
The line about the lawyer showing up with your file still in the envelope made me cringe because that is the whole ballgame with these cases. The TV guys in Fresno spend all their money on ads, not on staff who sit down and actually read 500 pages of medical notes before a hearing. I would hit up the legal aid office again even with the wait, or call around to smaller firms in Bakersfield or Modesto, because some of them do free case reviews first. The good ones will tell you right away if they even think you have a case instead of just signing you up. Ask straight out how many hearings that specific lawyer has done in the last year and if they will meet with you before the hearing to go over records. If they get weird about that question, walk.
