Paid a CA disability lawyer $2,500 upfront and it was the best money I ever lost
When my back gave out and my long term disability claim got denied by the insurance company back in March, I panicked and hired a CA disability lawyer out of Sacramento who wanted $2,500 as a retainer before he would even look at my file. I almost walked out of his office because that is a lot of money when you are not working and every bill is piling up. He told me straight up that most of these cases get won or lost on the medical records and that the insurance company was counting on me to give up. Six months later we won, and the back pay alone covered his fee plus a lot more, but honestly the part that saved me was him knowing exactly which doctors to send me to for the right paperwork. I have talked to people who tried to do it alone and got buried in appeals for a year, and I do not think I would have made it that long. If you are in California and your claim got denied, do not wait, the clock is not on your side. What did you all pay your lawyers, was it flat fee or a cut of the back pay?
