Was dead set against hiring a lawyer for my SSDI case, but my wife pushed me and I got approved in 4 months

I figured I could handle the paperwork myself since the SSA website lays it all out. Spent 8 months on my own, got denied twice. Gave in and called a firm in Sacramento, they handled the hearing and had a vocational expert tear apart their denial. My wife found them on Yelp with 200 reviews. Got back pay for those 8 months plus ongoing. Anyone else stubbornly try to go it alone first?

Ngl, I kinda see this the opposite way. You got approved in 4 months with a lawyer, but that's not always the norm. Some people with straightforward cases can do it themselves if they follow the SSA guides and fill out every form right. My neighbor did it solo in 6 months just by being super detailed about their medical records and work history. Lawyers take a cut of back pay too, usually 25% capped at 7k. So if your case is clean, you might save that money. But if you got denied twice like you did, then yeah, calling in help makes sense. Just depends on the person and their disability, really.

Your neighbor did it solo in 6 months? That's wild man, no way that's typical.
