Bought a $340 dovetail jig I used exactly twice before going back to hand cutting
Two winters back I finally broke down and bought a dovetail jig. Everyone on the forums swore by them, said I was wasting my evenings with a backsaw. First drawer stack I ran through it, the pins and tails fit so loose I had to shim them with sawdust and glue. Second run, I dialed it in closer but the tearout on the half blinds was brutal, even with a backer board. I spent $340 on the jig, another $60 on the fancy bit it wanted, and about 6 hours messing with setup on a set of 4 drawers. My hand cut dovetails from the year before took me 40 minutes a drawer and they looked better than anything that jig ever turned out. I sold it on marketplace for $180 and took the loss. Anyone here actually get good results from one of these, or did you all just quietly go back to a marking gauge like I did?
