Bought a new square yesterday and it got me thinking about trust

I picked up a Starrett 6 inch combo square at the hardware store after my old one started wobbling. Cost me about $45 which felt steep for a piece of metal. Got home and checked it against a known straight edge and it was dead on. That got me thinking about all the times I've trusted a cheap square from the big box store and then wondered why my miters were off by a hair. My dad always said a cabinetmaker's square is like a carpenter's level you gotta check it before you trust it. I just wish I'd listened 10 years ago instead of fighting with misaligned drawers. Has anyone else had a tool they used for years that was actually the source of their problems?

It's funny how that applies to everything, I’ve had cheap measuring cups throw off my baking for years before I finally upgraded.

I used to think spending good money on squares was just about bragging rights or something. But honestly, that post changed my mind. It's like you said, I've been blaming my saw or my technique for years when it might have been the tool all along.

My buddy Tim spent years thinking he just couldn't hang a door straight no matter how careful he was... finally borrowed a high-end level from a pro and his next door hung perfectly. He said it was like the tool was doing the work for him, just showing the truth. Makes you wonder how many other cheap tools we're fighting with when we think it's us.
