Just finished my first custom spice rack build after 3 years of cabinet work

I took on a job for a client in Portland last month who wanted a pull-out spice rack for a narrow 8 inch gap between their fridge and stove. It took me three tries to get the glides right and the depth perfect so the jars wouldn't tip when you pull it out. Anyone else find these skinny pull-out builds way trickier than full drawer boxes?

Ugh, tell me about it. Skinny pull-outs are the worst. I swear the tolerances are impossible. One millimeter off and the whole thing binds up or the jars wobble like they're on a boat.

Read somewhere that some guys over on Fine Woodworking's forum swear by using a tiny shim of packing tape on the back side of the glide channels to take up the slop. I tried it on my second attempt at that skinny pull-out and it actually helped a ton with the binding issues. Still had to re-cut the box twice because the depth was off by a hair, but the tape trick bought me just enough play for the slides to run smooth. Your mileage may vary depending on the brand of slides you use, though.

A buddy of mine ran into this exact problem with a narrow pullout he was fitting for his spice rack. He tried the packing tape trick after reading about it somewhere and it worked like a charm on the first try. Then he got cocky and tried the same fix on a drawer with cheap bottom-of-the-barrel slides from the hardware store. The tape just peeled right off after a week and the drawer started binding worse than before. He ended up scrapping the whole thing and starting over with better slides.
