Ten years of cutting dados wrong before a retired carpenter set me straight

Been building cabinets since 2014. Always cut my dados with the blade height set to match the plywood thickness. Worked fine until last month when an old timer named Dave watched me setup. He asked why I was making more dust than sawdust. Told me to drop the blade height by 1/8 inch and take two passes. Tried it on a test piece and the fit was cleaner than anything I've ever made. Any other dumb mistakes you guys caught yourself doing for years?

Lower blade height and now the saw sounds like it's whispering sweet nothings.

Does the lower blade height reduce burning on the second pass too?
