That old timer was right about glue squeeze-out
A retired guy named Bill at the lumber yard told me to stop wiping glue off with a wet rag and just let it cure, then chisel it. I thought he was full of it until I tried it on a walnut desk last month, the finish came out way cleaner and no white residue around the joints. Anyone else do this or am I just slow on the uptake?

Yep, I was slow too, spent years scrubbing like a fool before Bill's trick saved my table AND my pride.
