Found out the average cable drop is way shorter than I guessed and I've been overthinking every run
So I was poking around a training booklet at the shop in Cincinnati last Tuesday and there it was in black and white: the average residential drop is only around 60 to 75 feet, and I sat there feeling dumb because I've been measuring and re-measuring runs on every single job like the house was a football field. I've been doing this 4 years and I always assumed most homes needed 150 feet of slack and then some. My lead laughed at me when I showed him the page and said he could've saved me hours of walking back to the truck for more cable if I'd just asked. What got me is nobody ever mentioned it during my onboarding, it was all safety videos and how to fill out the paperwork. Last week I did a two-story place in Oakley and the actual run was 58 feet, and I had been planning for triple that in my head the whole drive over. Now I'm wondering how many rolls I wasted second-guessing myself on tight jobs. What number do you all keep in your head for a typical drop, or do you just measure and let it be what it is?
