Just overheard a guy at the supply house bragging about not using ground rods on his last 3 jobs

Dude actually said it saves him 20 minutes per house and he's never had a call back yet. That's gonna bite someone hard when lightning finds the path through a customer's TV instead of the earth.

Sheesh, that's some next level dumb right there lol. Ground rods aren't a suggestion, they're literally code for a reason. Saving 20 minutes now could cost a homeowner thousands later when their electronics fry. And good luck explaining to your insurance or the inspector why you skipped it. I'd be willing to bet that "never had a call back" just means he hasn't been caught yet. That kind of shortcut is just asking for trouble down the road.

Come on @uma_martinez, maybe he's just ahead of the curve finding ways to cut costs in a competitive market, and if the homeowners never complain, is it really a problem? A bond wire to the plumbing and a UFER ground at the panel could handle most of the surge without that extra rod, and 20 minutes adds up fast when you're trying to feed your family.
