Learning to listen for buzzing saved a job
Was about to cut into a wall when I heard a faint hum from inside. Turned out to be live wires from a DIY project, so now I double-check with a tester.

That hum probably wasn't even from the main power lines. Most houses have low voltage wires for doorbells or thermostats buzzing in walls all the time, and those won't hurt you. Getting a tester out for every single cut seems like a lot of work for a tiny risk. People do this stuff all the time without a problem.

But how risky was it really? That hum could've been from anything, maybe just low voltage wiring for a doorbell. Seems like getting a tester out is a bit overcautious for most DIY spots.
