Pro tip: Use a toner probe before drilling into drywall on big jobs

After I punched through a hidden gas line on a new build in Denver last month, I finally listened to the old timer who said toner probes save time over trusting blueprints, has anyone else been burned by wall cavities that don't match the plans?

My boss swore by toner probes for years and I thought he was just being paranoid, but after finding a live wire that wasn't on any set of plans I had I bought one the next day. Way cheaper than the alternative honestly.

Yeah I hear you on finding mystery wires, but "way cheaper than the alternative" feels like a stretch. I mean how often are you really finding live wires that aren't on plans? Like once in a blue moon. A toner probe is like a hundred bucks plus, and a decent voltage tester is like twenty. I've been doing this long enough that I trust my tick tracer and a little common sense way more than I trust a tool I have to clip onto every wire. Feels like a solution looking for a problem half the time.
