Question about using a 6 foot ladder for attic work
Heard a guy at the supply house say he never uses anything but a 6 footer. Said it's faster and safer. I used to think that too, but a job in Phoenix last month changed my mind. Had to run a line across a deep attic with blown-in insulation. My 6 foot ladder sank right in, almost tipped. Now I bring a plank for those jobs. Anyone else think a one-size-fits-all ladder rule is risky?

You almost tipped over in blown-in insulation? That's a terrifying mental picture. The plank is a smart fix, but the idea of a sinking ladder makes my stomach drop. It really shows how one rule can't cover every attic.

That plank idea is smart for blown in insulation, I'll give you that. But calling a six foot ladder risky as a general rule is where I disagree. It's the most stable platform for probably 80% of attic work if you know how to place it. The real problem is not the ladder, it's not checking your footing first. You gotta find the joists every single time, no matter what you're standing on.
