Warning: A new hire fresh out of training asked me why we still use a certain old tool
I was showing a kid, maybe 22, how to prep a drop in a tight attic in Omaha, and he saw my old manual fish tape spool. He said, 'My instructor said these are basically museum pieces now, everyone uses the glow rods.' It hit different because he wasn't being rude, just genuinely curious, and it made me realize how much the gear has shifted in just a decade. What's one piece of 'old' kit you still keep on the truck that the new guys always ask about?

Okay, but the whole 'museum piece' talk feels overblown. That manual fish tape still gets the job done when you're in a bind and your glow rod is three trucks away. People act like using older tools is a moral failing. My dad's old Yankee push drill still fixes a hinge faster than I can find a charged battery for my impact driver. The new stuff is great, but the old stuff isn't magic, it's just tools.

My old corded rotary phone tester, the kind with the actual bells. The new guys just stare at it like it's a fossil, but it gives a solid ring voltage reading every single time. Sometimes the simple gear just works.

Remember when a trainee saw my hand crank drill and asked if it was for making milkshakes?
