Can we talk about how probate courts handle small estates differently?
Last month I went to the Santa Clara County courthouse to help my aunt with her dad's estate. The clerk told me that if the total value is under $184,500, you can use a small estate affidavit instead of full probate. I almost spent $3,000 on a lawyer before she pointed that out. Has anyone else saved money this way or found other tricks for simple estates?

That clerk saved you a bundle. It's funny how often we assume the most expensive route is the only one, isn't it? I've noticed this pattern in a lot of areas, not just legal stuff. Like how people will pay a handyman $200 to fix a running toilet when a $5 part and a 10 minute YouTube video would do the same thing. Or when I needed a notary recently and almost went to a paid service, but my bank does it for free. We get so used to thinking professionals are the only answer that we forget to ask the simple questions first.

Oh man, you just reminded me of something I read a few months back about how people overpay for things just because they assume the expert route is the only one. There was this article about a guy who spent like $400 on a plumber to fix a leaky faucet, and it turned out to be a worn out washer that cost like 50 cents at the hardware store. I get that some stuff needs a pro, but it's wild how often we skip the 5 minute Google search. I think social media and all those ads make us feel like we're gonna mess up if we try anything ourselves, so we just hand over our wallets.

That faucet story rings a bell... I saw a video on YouTube about a guy who fixed his own washing machine after getting a quote for $300. The issue was just a clogged drain pump filter, took him maybe twenty minutes. It's scary how easy it is to fall into that trap, thinking everything needs a pro... especially when you're busy and stressed, and the ad says "just call us" right there on your phone.
