My landlord tried to raise my rent $400 in one month in Oakland
After 3 years in the same apartment, my landlord hit me with a 30 day notice for a $400 increase and I found out from a tenant rights group that it broke the local rent control cap, has anyone else fought an illegal rent hike here?

Wrote a formal letter citing the local ordinance. Landlord backed off fast.

Hell yeah, good for you for checking with that tenant rights group first. Same thing happened to me in my old place in San Francisco, landlord tried to jack it up $350 out of nowhere. I sent him a certified letter with the exact rent control ordinance number and a printout from the city website. He folded in like a week and even refunded the overcharge for the month I paid it under protest. Stick to your guns, man, these guys count on people not knowing their rights.

Used to think landlords could do whatever they wanted with their property, but dealing with my own rent hike last year totally flipped my view. You're right to fight it, those tenant laws exist for a reason.
