Pro tip: I used to ignore the 21 day rule for small claims in LA, now I calendar it right away
I got burned last year when I tried to sue a guy over $1,200 he owed me from a side job in Koreatown. I figured I could just walk into the Stanley Mosk courthouse whenever and file the forms, but the clerk told me I was past the deadline because the small claims limit for that kind of claim is two years and I had waited too long on some of the dates. Now I write the date of every handshake deal in my phone the second it happens, and I set a reminder for 30 days before any deadline hits. What really got me was learning that a demand letter can restart the clock in some cases, which I never knew before. It took me three trips to the courthouse and a $75 filing fee to figure all this out. The self help center on the first floor is actually free and way more useful than any website I found. Has anyone else had luck with the online filing system they rolled out, or do you still go in person?
That demand letter thing is huge and most people sleep on it, I sent a certified one and it bought me almost another year to file. Definitely try the online system too, it saved me a trip to Stanley Mosk and the fees were the same as going in person.
