The day my landlord tried to evict me over a lemon tree

Back in 2021, my landlord in San Diego sent me a 60-day eviction notice because I planted a lemon tree in the backyard without asking. Thing is, I checked CA civil code and found out tenants can put in plants as long as they don't damage the property. I showed up at the hearing with photos of the tree in a pot and the code printed out, and the judge dismissed the whole thing in 5 minutes. Has anyone else dealt with landlords trying to use illegal eviction tactics here?

Haha okay your landlord REALLY thought he was gonna get away with that nonsense huh. I can't believe he actually took it to a hearing instead of just backing down when you showed him the law. That's the kind of stubborn that must make him a delight to deal with on other stuff too. But honestly it's hilarious that he probably spent hours worrying about a lemon tree when the judge dismissed it faster than it takes to squeeze a lemon. I bet he's still bitter every time he sees that little tree in its pot. Classic landlord overreach that totally backfired.
