Guy at the repair bench next to mine said he just swaps shutter units instead of cleaning them, and that's been eating at me
I was at a shop in Portland picking up a CLA job and the tech at the next bench was on his third A7 shutter swap of the day. He said it flat out, no shame: cleaning an assembly takes him 90 minutes and a swap takes 20, so the customer gets billed the same either way. That math works until you hit a body with 40k clicks where the real problem is a worn curtain, not a dirty one. I pulled two cameras off his scrap shelf last week and both shutter units had plenty of life left in them. If we all start treating swaps as the default, the parts supply dries up and the skillset dies with it. How many of you are still actually cleaning and re-timing curtains versus just dropping in a donor unit?
