Overheard a customer say 'you just twist it and it works' about a shutter
Was at a camera swap meet in Portland last weekend and some guy was bragging to his friend about how he fixed a stuck shutter on a Nikon F2 by 'just twisting it a bit.' I wanted to step in so bad. I spent 3 hours last month fixing a seized shutter on an old Spotmatic because someone did exactly that and bent the curtain shaft. Do people really think these things are designed to be manhandled like a jar lid? Anyone else deal with customers who think brute force is a repair technique?

Used to be that guy. Watching someone snap a gear changed my whole view on it.

Watching someone snap a gear" still gives me chills. I saw a buddy's fishing reel lock up hard and the whole spool just exploded off the frame. Metal bits flying everywhere, line all tangled up. That sound, it's like a gunshot. I used to think I was invincible with cheap tools, but after that I started checking everything twice. Now I buy the stuff that's a little more solid, even if it costs a bit more. It's funny how one bad moment can make you pay attention for good.
