Warning: I soaked a stuck filter ring in vinegar for 2 days and the finish came off
I had a customer's old 50mm with a filter ring welded on by 40 years of gunk. I read somewhere that vinegar eats corrosion so I let it sit for two days in a plastic tub. The filter finally broke loose but it took the black anodizing with it, bare silver metal all around the front. Customer picked it up Friday and just stared at it for a while. I told him what happened and he was cool about it, but I still feel bad. Turns out vinegar is way too strong for that job and I should have just used a hair dryer and a strap wrench like normal. Does anybody out there have a soak that actually works and doesn't strip the finish?
