My $40 tarp setup beat a friend's $600 tent setup, now he won't camp with me

Last spring up at Lake Ouachita, my buddy Dave showed up with a brand new ultralight tent and I brought a cheap poly tarp and paracord. He spent 20 minutes wrestling with poles and stakes while I had my tarp pitched in 5 minutes. When a thunderstorm rolled in that night, his seams leaked and my tarp stayed dry. He still won't admit the tarp worked better, but I've saved $560 that could go toward a real sleeping pad instead. Anyone else found that overpriced gear just adds weight to your wallet?
