My uncle swore a $12 blue foam pad beats any inflatable and I froze my butt off at 9,000 feet last weekend
Honestly he camped in Missouri his whole life so he has no clue what real cold feels like. That pad compressed to nothing on frozen ground near Breckenridge and I got maybe 2 hours of sleep. What do you all use below freezing that does not cost $200?
My brother pulled the same thing on a trip to Grayson Highlands two winters ago. He had this old army surplus foam pad he got for like 8 bucks at a flea market and kept telling me how it "never fails." I woke up at 3am with my hip frozen to the ground and could not feel my toes for an hour. Foam pads are decent in mild weather but once the ground actually freezes solid they turn into a sheet of ice under you. I ended up buying a cheap closed cell pad and stacking it with a basic air pad, that combo got me through a 15 degree night without wanting to die, and both together were still under 80 bucks.
