Pro tip: swapped my tent stakes for 8 inch nail spikes after they bent in one weekend at Big Bend
Went camping at Big Bend last March and bent 4 of my aluminum stakes in one night. The ground there is basically concrete with a thin layer of dust on top. Next trip I brought 8 inch galvanized spikes from the hardware store, about $1.20 each. Same campsite, same mallet, and all 10 went in with maybe 4 hits each. They weigh a bit more but I stopped fighting the ground at 11pm. Anyone else switch to hardware store stakes or did you just buy the expensive titanium ones?
Those galvanized spikes are heavy as hell though, I carried 12 of them on a 9 mile hike into the Chisos and felt every ounce by the end. Titanium ones cost a fortune but at 60 cents an ounce I'd rather cry once at the register than every step on the trail.
