That cheap tarp tent combo surprised me after 3 rainy nights

I bought one of those budget 2 person tent and tarp kits for 45 bucks at a gas station near Moab, mostly as a joke. My usual setup is a 300 dollar backpacking tent, so I figured this would fall apart on day one. Three nights of sideways rain and wind later, the thing held up better than my expensive gear did on a trip to Yosemite last spring. The stakes were trash and I replaced them with 4 inch nails, but the seam sealing actually worked. What convinced me was waking up dry after a thunderstorm while my buddy's high end tent had a puddle in the footbox. Has anyone else had a cheap piece of gear out perform their premium stuff? I'm curious what else I've been overpaying for.
