The mossy trail in the Smokies that killed my boot confidence

Back in April I hiked the Alum Cave Trail up to Myrtle Point and slipped on a wet rock slab about a mile in. My boots had great tread when I bought them, but they were three seasons old and I never thought about how much the rubber hardens over time. I slid about six feet before grabbing a rhododendron root, and that was the moment I started checking the date code on every pair of soles. Has anyone else had a close call like that, or do you just replace boots on a regular schedule no matter what?

Same thing happens with car tires, nobody checks until it's too late.
