The REI tent stake that bent after one rocky site, my bad
I kept blaming cheap stakes for failing in hard ground, but turns out I was hammering them at the wrong angle. Spent a weekend at Joshua Tree and bent three of my 6 inch aluminum ones before a ranger showed me to start them at 45 degrees, then straighten out. That little fix saved my second set of stakes from Colorado campsites last fall. Anyone else had a simple technique change that saved your gear from getting trashed?

Stakes are cheap, technique is free. Same trick fixed my tent problems too.
