TIL a faulty tent stake can start a fire at 2am near Big Bend

Last weekend my cheap aluminum stake snapped in gusty wind and the rainfly whipped into the campfire, shooting embers onto my dry tent wall. I tackled it with my sleeping bag and dumped my whole 2.5 gallon water jug on the spot, then spent an hour checking every seam with a headlamp. Has anyone else had gear fail exactly when the weather turns nasty?
