Walked into a REI in Denver and walked out hating my tent setup

I was there last Saturday to grab a new sleeping pad and overheard a guy talking about his tent's rainfly tensioning system. Made me realize I've been pitching my tent wrong for 3 years - water always pooled on the sides. Anyone else have a store encounter that completely changed their gear game?

Yeah @sam_thomas kinda missed the point, that rainfly tip actually saved my gear from getting ruined too.
