Booked my own spot on a car hauler in Phoenix, saved $400
I needed to get my Civic from Phoenix to Portland and the big brokers all quoted me around $1,100, so I called three small haulers directly and one guy said he had an empty slot on a run leaving in 4 days for $690 cash. I met the driver at a Walmart parking lot on Bell Road, took photos of every panel and the odometer before he loaded it, and the car showed up 6 days later with zero new scratches. Has anyone else gone around the brokers like this, or did I just get lucky with this guy?
That $410 gap between the broker quote and the cash deal is the same thing that happens everywhere once a middleman gets involved, from car shipping to wedding cakes to hotel rooms. Brokers mostly just post your job on a load board and take a cut for answering the phone. Calling the guy with the truck directly skips the markup, and taking photos before pickup is the part most people forget. You didn't get lucky, you just did the two things that actually protect you.
