PSA: I switched from a tarp to a proper car cover in my driveway and the rust stopped spreading
I parked my 2009 Accord outside under a cheap blue tarp for two winters in Cleveland and the paint went to hell. Condensation would build up under the tarp and just sit there, and by spring I had bubbles along the rear wheel arch. Last fall I spent $85 on a fitted breathable cover from a brand called Seal Skin and checked under it every few weeks. The difference is night and day because the fabric lets moisture escape instead of trapping it against the metal. Six months in, no new rust spots forming and the paint still beads water. Anyone else made this switch, or do you just skip covers and wax twice a year?
Did the cheap blue tarp actually trap water, or was it the fact that it sat right on the paint? Tarps that touch the car are the real problem since they rub and hold moisture against the metal, while a fitted cover stays loose enough to let air move. You could probably get the same result with a cheap tarp on a frame that keeps it off the surface, since it's the contact and airflow that matter, not really the brand.
