Shoutout to the $40 car cover that held up when my garage shelf fell on my project car
I keep my 1987 RX-7 in a rented garage about 20 minutes from my apartment because my building won't allow project cars. The landlord never fixed a sagging shelf above the bay, and it finally gave out a couple weeks ago and dumped a stack of old paint cans and a jack onto the car. The cheap cover I grabbed at a swap meet took most of the hit, and the only real damage was a small crease over the rear quarter panel. It happened on a Sunday morning, so I had no one to call and just spent two hours sweeping up spilled paint before it dried on the floor. I also noticed the cover trapped a surprising amount of dust underneath, which I guess is normal for a non breathable one. Now I'm thinking about adding a simple wood brace under the shelf since the landlord clearly won't. What's everyone using to keep stuff off their cars when the storage spot is less than ideal?
A buddy of mine who rents a shop bay had the same thing happen with a shelf full of junk, and he ended up running a couple 2x4s from the shelf down to the floor as legs so it couldnt fold again. Cheap fix and it held up fine. I read somewhere that most of those cheapo covers are made of a poly type material that doesnt breathe at all, which is why you saw all the dust trapped under it, so maybe look for one that says breathable if you replace it. For the shelf itself you could also just clear it off completely and only store light stuff up there, paint cans and a jack were never gonna end well. Do you rent month to month or are you stuck there for a while?
