The garage shelf collapse that crushed my winter wheel set
Last month I stacked my spare set of Blizzaks on the top shelf in my garage, just above my dad's old workbench. I figured the shelf could handle it since it held boxes of holiday junk for years, but at 3 AM the whole thing came down and the wheels bounced off the concrete floor. One rim got a nasty dent and two tires lost their bead, and I had to pay $180 to get them reseated at a shop on Burnet Road. Anyone else store wheels vertically on a wall rack instead, or am I the only one who learns this the hard way?
Three in the morning is the part that got me. You were dead asleep and then boom, glass rattling, dog going nuts, whole house thinking someone drove a car into the garage. The shelf held holiday boxes for years so of course you trusted it, but boxes of ornaments do not weigh 200 pounds of rubber and aluminum. That weight up high is what did it, plus cold tires get hard and the shelf brackets were probably barely in the studs. Wall rack is the way, or just lay them flat on the floor in a corner, wheels do not care about sitting down. $180 hurts but at least only one rim got bent, could have been all four.
