Guy at my office in Austin said to never take the first salary offer, and I think that advice is overrated
He swore it got him an extra $8k back in 2019, but when I pushed back on my own offer last month the recruiter just said the number was final and I almost lost the job over it, so I'm curious if anyone else has tried to negotiate and just gotten a flat no.

Been there and it sucks. I tried pushing back on an offer back in 2021 and the hiring manager flat out told me the budget was locked, take it or leave it. I took it because I needed the job, but that whole "always counter" rule assumes the company actually has room to move, and a lot of them don't. Feel for you almost losing the offer over it, that stress is not worth a couple grand.
