Hot take: I ignored a job listing that said no cover letter, and I think it cost me the role
Six months ago I applied for a content job at a small shop in Portland and the listing said cover letters optional, so I skipped it and just sent my resume. Two weeks later I got a rejection email that actually said they went with someone who showed more interest in the company. I was mad at first because they told me it was optional, but then a friend who hires at her own company said optional really means you should still write one or you look lazy. So last month I tried again for a similar role and wrote a short three paragraph letter that took me about 20 minutes. I got a call back two days later and made it to the second round. I still think the whole thing is dumb because my resume already proves I can write, but I cannot argue with the results. Now I am stuck wondering if I should write one for every single job even when they say not to bother. Does anyone here actually skip cover letters and still get interviews, or am I just wasting my time fighting it?
