I finally asked my boss why she skipped me for a promotion 3 years ago

Back in 2021, I was passed over for a lead position at a school in Portland. I never brought it up, just assumed it was because I was too new. Last month, I finally worked up the nerve to ask my boss about it over coffee. Turns out she thought I didn't want more responsibility since I always turned down extra committees. I had no idea that's how it looked. She told me straight up: "You can't get picked if you don't raise your hand." Has anyone else lost out on something just because they kept quiet about wanting it?

Hold on, is this really that deep? You didn't ask for committees, you didn't want extra work, and three years later you're still hung up on it? Sounds like you dodged a bullet honestly. Extra committees are just extra unpaid work half the time, and your boss probably did you a favor. Plus, I bet that lead position was more headache than it was worth with all the meetings and paperwork. Maybe you're just overthinking a small thing that happened ages ago.

Honestly you're right. Never saw it that way before.

It's funny how little stuff like this sticks in your head way longer than it should.
