I finally asked my old manager why she never gave me feedback, her answer surprised me
Back in 2021 I was working at a call center in Cleveland and I kept getting passed over for the team lead spot. I figured I was doing something wrong but nobody ever told me what. One day after my shift I just asked my manager straight up why she hardly ever gave me any feedback, good or bad. She said "I dont give feedback unless someone asks because most people get defensive, but you asked so here it is." Then she laid out three specific things I did that held me back, like jumping to solutions before letting customers vent. That one conversation changed how I approach every job since. Has anyone else had a manager who only opened up after you pushed for it?
most people get defensive" yeah no kidding, that's management 101 right there. She basically waited until you were out of the promotion running to drop the truth bomb. Classic. But hey, at least you got the answer, even if it took a year and a half of spinning your wheels. My old boss only gave me feedback when I messed up so bad HR got involved, and even then it was mostly him yelling about the paperwork. You got off easy with just the "let customers vent" tip, I had to learn that one from a guy threatening to call corporate on me.
