I finally messed up a client invoice in front of my boss at a networking lunch in Portland
I was at a coffee shop off Hawthorne, handed over a spreadsheet with the wrong quarterly totals, and my boss just stared at me for 10 seconds. She didn't even say anything, just pointed at the numbers until I realized I'd copied last quarter's data by mistake. Has anyone else had a moment where a small error made you rethink your whole check process?

As someone who used to do freelance work out of a co-op space off Belmont, I'd say the real issue might be less about the numbers and more about how you handled recovery. That awkward silence from your boss is brutal, but it's actually a hidden test of how you handle mistakes under pressure. The trick isn't just fixing the error it's about showing you can catch it and course correct in real time without making it weird. Next time, try saying something like "oh wow, my bad I pulled the wrong file" right away instead of waiting for her to point it out. Saves you the silence and makes you look more in control.

Yeah, straight up. That silent stare is a test, and you passing it makes you look way better.

Honestly, I used to think owning up to a mistake right away made you look weak or unprepared, but this totally flips that on its head. It makes so much sense that catching it yourself and calling it out before anyone else can actually build trust, because it shows you're paying attention and not trying to hide anything. That "oh wow, my bad" thing feels way more natural than waiting for the awkward silence to drag on, so I'm definitely gonna try that next time.
