My charge nurse asked why I never applied to the ER, and I've been annoyed at myself for 2 weeks
I've been on the same med-surg floor for 6 years now and honestly just settled into it. Last Thursday my charge nurse Dana pulled me aside after shift and said I handle the heavy patients better than anyone she's trained, so why had I never tried the ER? I laughed it off but then went home and looked at the pay difference, roughly $9 more an hour, and now I can't stop thinking about it. The thing is, I'm scared I waited too long and the window closed. Anyone here switch specialties way later than they planned? How did you know it was actually time to move?
The pay bump is real but it's not $9 more an hour in your check, night and weekend diffs in the ER are what actually pad that number so run the math on your specific shift before you get too hyped. Also 6 years on med-surg is not too late, half the ER nurses I know came over after 5 or 10 years on the floor. What makes it work is being solid at time management and not freezing when stuff goes sideways, which it sounds like Dana already sees in you.
